Frequently asked questions
Straight answers on approval, funding, fees, and compliance. Still curious? Call and ask us anything.
How long does the approval process take?▼
Most applications are approved within one business day. Once we have your basic business details and a recent processing statement, underwriting typically comes back same-day, and we schedule equipment setup right after.
How soon will I get my money after the transaction is processed?▼
Standard funding is next business day for batches closed before the daily cutoff. Weekend and holiday batches fund the next banking day. Same-day funding is available on qualifying accounts.
Do I need a business license to obtain a merchant account?▼
Not always. Many sole proprietors are approved with a Social Security number and a valid ID. If your city or state requires a license for your industry, underwriting will ask for it, and we will tell you up front.
Do I need a business checking account to obtain a merchant account?▼
You need a checking account we can deposit into. A business account is strongly recommended for clean bookkeeping, but sole proprietors can often use a personal checking account.
Do I need to have an American Express or Discover account before I apply?▼
No. American Express and Discover are enabled as part of your merchant account, so all major cards work on day one with a single statement and a single deposit stream.
What is the discount rate?▼
The discount rate is the percentage of each sale kept by the processor and card brands. On our dual pricing program that cost is offset at the register, which is how qualifying merchants reach 0% effective processing.
What is an interchange fee?▼
Interchange is the non-negotiable portion paid to the card-issuing bank on every transaction. Visa, Mastercard, Amex, and Discover publish these rates, and no processor can discount them. What varies is the markup on top.
What is NPF?▼
NPF is the non-qualified processing fee applied when a transaction misses the best interchange category, for example a keyed-in card or a missing address match. Proper setup and settlement habits keep NPF low.
Do I have to be PCI compliant?▼
Yes. Every business that accepts cards must validate PCI compliance annually. It is a short questionnaire for most small merchants, and we walk you through it so nothing is missed.
What are the charges for PCI compliance?▼
Nothing extra from us. PCI support and the annual questionnaire are included with your Minerva account, with no separate compliance charge and no surprise non-compliance penalty.
